MANILA — Seafaring Family International (SeaFam) led a solemn flag-raising and wreath-laying ceremony at Rizal Park’s Independence Flagpole on June 25 to mark the International Day of the Seafarer. The global observance, organized annually by the International Maritime Organization (IMO), pays tribute to the indispensable role of seafarers in sustaining international trade and connecting nations.

Flag Ceremony Led by Arianne Rocha

The ceremony was spearheaded by SeaFam Chairperson Arianne Rocha, who emphasized unity and dignity within the maritime community as the Philippines joined the worldwide celebration. Representatives from the Department of Migrant Workers (DMW), Overseas Workers Welfare Administration (OWWA), Maritime Industry Authority (MARINA), Technical Education and Skills Development Authority (TESDA), the Philippine Marine Corps, and other institutions also took part in the event, honoring the service and sacrifice of Filipino seafarers.

SeaFam Journey Since 2014

SeaFam’s story traces back to 2014 when Rocha, a media figure with strong roots in the maritime sector, founded the organization. She recognized the unique challenges faced by seafarers and their families and established a support group within a manning company to provide essential social services. Her guiding belief was clear: for seafarers to excel in their profession, they must also be supported in achieving a fulfilling family life. Over the years, this initiative has grown into a recognized advocate for the welfare of seafarers and their loved ones.

Global Call for Harassment-Free Ships

This year’s observance echoed the IMO’s global theme #MyHarassmentFreeShip, calling for a safe and respectful working environment for every seafarer, regardless of background. The event highlighted the Philippines’ continued commitment to supporting the men and women who keep global trade moving.

The International Day of the Seafarer is observed annually on June 25 to honor the contributions of the world’s maritime workforce and raise awareness of the issues they face at sea.
