Safeguarding the Seas Beyond Borders

Cayetano underscored the treaty’s strategic significance for the Philippines, an archipelagic and maritime nation whose economy and food security are deeply tied to healthy oceans. She highlighted that the agreement directly addresses destructive activities such as overfishing, deep-sea mining, and marine pollution that threaten biodiversity outside national borders.

Advancing Global Development Goals

As Chairperson of the Senate Committee on Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), Innovation, and Futures Thinking, Cayetano further emphasized that the ratification of the treaty advances the country’s commitments to global development goals. These include safeguarding marine ecosystems, strengthening climate action, supporting sustainable livelihoods, and fostering international cooperation for ocean protection.

The Senate’s approval of this resolution affirms the Philippines’ active role in global marine governance and strengthens its commitment to preserving ocean resources for future generations.

Strengthening the Philippines’ Global Voice

This development also positions the Philippines as an active contributor to the international effort of protecting the world’s oceans. By approving this resolution, the Senate demonstrates its resolve to work hand-in-hand with other nations in enforcing sustainable practices beyond territorial waters. It reflects the country’s awareness that marine biodiversity is not only a matter of environmental concern but also one of economic survival, food security, and climate resilience. As global challenges grow more complex, the Philippines’ support of this UNCLOS agreement highlights its vision of shared responsibility in protecting ocean resources for the benefit of present and future generations.
