The Panama-flagged containership Orita encountered a complete engine failure on 8 December 2025 while transiting the Çanakkale Strait (Dardanelles), according to maritime-traffic data.
At approximately 18:00 UTC, Orita lost propulsion off the coast of Gelibolu, prompting an immediate distress call.
In response, the tugs Kurtarma 20 and Kurtarma 18 — under the coordination of the Çanakkale Ship Traffic Services Center — alongside a strait pilot, successfully guided Orita to the designated Şevketiye Anchorage, where the vessel was safely moored.
Authorities report no injuries, no structural damage to the vessel, and no pollution detected. Maritime traffic in the strait was not substantially disrupted.
An investigation is now underway to determine the root cause of the engine failure and to evaluate Orita’s technical readiness before it resumes its voyage.
