CMA CGM Sends Giant Containership Through Suez Canal Amid Ongoing Security Concerns
A new ultra-large containership from CMA CGM has passed through the Suez Canal, marking a major move as shipping companies continue to test routes in the region. The transit was highlighted by the Suez Canal Authority as part of efforts to restore confidence and bring back more vessels to the route.
The vessel is one of the newest and largest in the world, powered by LNG and capable of carrying massive cargo volumes between Asia and Europe. It sailed through the canal on its maiden voyage, showing that the waterway can still handle modern mega ships despite recent disruptions.

However, the move comes amid ongoing concerns over safety in the Red Sea and nearby areas. Since late 2023, attacks on commercial vessels have forced many shipping companies to avoid the Suez route and instead sail around the Cape of Good Hope, leading to longer travel time and higher costs.
CMA CGM itself has changed its routing decisions several times, sometimes using the canal and sometimes avoiding it depending on the security situation. This latest transit is seen as part of a cautious return, but not a full commitment to regular operations in the area.
