Tension in Gulf waters continued to rise after a bulk carrier sailing near Qatar was reportedly struck by an unidentified projectile on Sunday, May 10, amid ongoing regional conflict involving Iran, the United States, and allied nations in the Middle East.
According to the United Kingdom Maritime Trade Operations (UKMTO), the vessel reported being hit while transiting waters near the port of Mesaieed, Qatar. Initial information indicated that a small fire broke out onboard following the impact. The fire was later extinguished, and authorities confirmed that no crew members were injured during the incident. No pollution or environmental damage was also reported.

Qatar’s Ministry of Defense later stated that the vessel had departed from Abu Dhabi and was approaching Qatari waters when it was reportedly targeted by a drone. Despite the incident, the vessel was able to continue its voyage toward Mesaieed Port after onboard emergency measures brought the situation under control.
Iranian media outlets reportedly claimed that the vessel had links to the United States, although there was no immediate official confirmation regarding the ownership or operational connection of the ship. Authorities have also not yet identified the exact type of projectile used during the attack.
The incident added further concern among shipping companies, vessel operators, and seafarers navigating the Gulf region, especially as security risks continue to increase in nearby waters.
At the same time, Kuwait announced that its military intercepted two hostile drones that entered its airspace early Sunday. The United Arab Emirates also reported aerial threats as Gulf nations raised alert levels and strengthened defense measures due to the growing regional tensions.
Maritime security agencies continue to monitor the situation closely as commercial vessels transiting the Gulf remain exposed to potential threats linked to the ongoing conflict.
