The number of piracy and armed robbery incidents against ships in Asia declined sharply during the first half of 2026, according to the latest report from the Regional Cooperation Agreement on Combating Piracy and Armed Robbery against Ships in Asia (ReCAAP) Information Sharing Centre. A total of 35 incidents were recorded from January to June, representing a 64 percent decrease compared to the 96 incidents reported during the same period in 2025.
The Straits of Malacca and Singapore remained the region with the highest number of reported incidents, accounting for 21 cases. However, this also marked a significant improvement, with incidents in the area falling by 74 percent compared to the first half of last year. ReCAAP attributed the decline to stronger law enforcement efforts by coastal states, closer regional cooperation, and the continued implementation of onboard security measures by the shipping industry.

While the overall trend showed encouraging progress, ReCAAP noted that some low-level theft incidents continue to occur, particularly in the eastbound lane of the Singapore Strait. The organization advised ship operators and crews to remain alert, maintain proper watchkeeping, and apply recommended security measures while transiting areas considered vulnerable to criminal activity.

The report also highlighted an increase in reported incidents in the Philippines compared with the previous year. Authorities have responded by carrying out enforcement operations, leading to the arrest of several suspected offenders. Meanwhile, no crew abduction incidents have been reported in the Sulu-Celebes Seas and waters off Eastern Sabah since January 2020, reflecting continued improvements in maritime security in those areas.
Despite the positive results across much of Asia, ReCAAP emphasized that piracy and armed robbery remain ongoing security concerns. The organization urged governments, maritime authorities, and the shipping industry to continue strengthening cooperation, sharing information, and maintaining preventive measures to sustain the downward trend and ensure the safety of seafarers and commercial shipping throughout the region.
