A sanctioned oil tanker is believed to be leaking oil in a protected marine area near the coast of Oman, based on satellite images and expert analysis. The vessel, named Caroline Bezengi, was previously sanctioned by the European Union and the United Kingdom for transporting Russian oil products.

According to ship tracking data, the tanker loaded Russian oil/ at the Russian port of Novorossiysk before starting its latest voyage. The ship last sent its public tracking signal on June 11 while sailing near the coast of Yemen. Since then, its exact movements have remained unknown.

Satellite images taken between July 2 and July 13 showed a long oil slick near Al-Qibliyyah Island, an environmentally protected area in Oman. Independent experts from environmental groups reviewed the images and agreed that the dark trail is likely an oil spill coming from the tanker.

The cause of the leak has not yet been confirmed. Experts say it could be due to mechanical damage or other possible incidents while the vessel was at sea. The company managing the tanker has not released a statement, while Omani authorities have also not commented on the situation.

If confirmed, the spill could harm marine life and damage the protected waters near Oman. Oil spills can affect fish, coral reefs, seabirds, and other sea animals, while also creating risks for nearby coastal communities and maritime activities.
