UMTC Breaks Ground on Green Energy Center to Advance Future-Ready Maritime Training
Aug 17, 2026

MANILA, PHILIPPINES — United Marine Training Center (UMTC) has officially broken ground on the United Marine Green Energy Center, marking a significant step toward strengthening the Philippines’ capacity to prepare seafarers for the rapidly evolving technologies, alternative fuels, and operational demands of the global maritime industry. The initiative aims to ensure that Filipino maritime professionals remain equipped for the changing requirements of modern shipping.

The Green Energy Center is a joint initiative of UMTC, Green Marine Group, and the Maritime Industry Authority (MARINA), combining maritime training infrastructure, technical expertise, and regulatory guidance. A key feature of the facility will be its onboard training environment, where seafarers can gain practical experience with vessel-related systems and alternative-fuel technologies, including fuel systems, safe operating procedures, risk management, and emergency response.

The development comes as the international shipping industry accelerates its transition toward lower-emission technologies and alternative marine fuels. With vessels increasingly adopting fuels such as LNG, methanol, ethanol, and other low- and zero-carbon energy solutions, seafarers will need additional knowledge and competencies to safely operate increasingly sophisticated shipboard systems. Realistic, hands-on training will therefore become increasingly important in preparing crews for next-generation vessels.

The groundbreaking ceremony also marked the beginning of what UMTC described as the Center’s legacy, featuring a ceremonial groundbreaking, the placement of a Time Capsule, and the signing of the Founding Legacy Wall. Maritime officials and industry representatives attended the event, including MARINA Administrator Sonia B. Malaluan, STCW Office Executive Director Samuel L. Batalla, Acting Deputy Administrator for Education, Training, and Certification Presca Lee Lugo, Green Marine Managing Director C/E Julian Lopez, Capt. Ariel Gaban, and IMEC IMTF Advisor Chief Elmer Palumbarit.

The event also highlighted the international and collaborative nature of the project. The Embassy of the Kingdom of the Netherlands was represented by Deputy Head of Mission Robert Van der Hum and Patricia Sarmiento-Alvendia of Economic Affairs, while former Owner’s Representative Joost Mes was also present. Their participation underscored the growing international interest in maritime sustainability, competency development, and the industry’s transition toward cleaner energy.

Beyond the construction of a new training facility, the Green Energy Center represents an investment in the future readiness and competitiveness of Filipino seafarers. Once developed, it is expected to help officers and crew acquire the practical skills needed to safely operate alternative-fuel vessels while supporting regulatory compliance, technological advancement, and maritime decarbonization. As shipping moves toward a more technologically advanced and lower-emission future, the Center emphasizes that alongside advanced vessels must be seafarers equipped with the knowledge, skills, and competencies to operate them safely and effectively.
