German container shipping company Hapag-Lloyd has signed an agreement to acquire a 25% stake in APM Terminals Maasvlakte II in Rotterdam, strengthening its presence at one of Europe’s major container gateways.

The investment will be made through Hapag-Lloyd’s Terminals and Infrastructure division, Hanseatic Global Terminals. Under the agreement, APM Terminals will retain operational control of the facility, while the two companies will work together to support its continued development, capacity expansion, and operational efficiency.

Located at the Port of Rotterdam, Maasvlakte II has been operational since 2015 and is currently undergoing a major expansion. The project includes an additional 1,000 meters of deep-sea berth, increasing the total to 2,000 meters, along with expanded yard capacity, four additional rail tracks, and further deployment of automated equipment.

Following the expansion, the terminal is expected to reach an annual handling capacity of approximately 5.4 million twenty-foot equivalent units (TEUs). The facility also serves as an important European hub for the Gemini Cooperation between Hapag-Lloyd and A.P. Moller–Maersk.

For Hapag-Lloyd, the investment is intended to secure long-term access to automated terminal capacity in Rotterdam while expanding its global terminal portfolio. The transaction also reflects continued investment in port infrastructure as shipping companies seek to improve the capacity, efficiency, and reliability of their international networks.
