The Department of Migrant Workers (DMW) is urging Filipino seafarers to pursue additional training and skills development as the global maritime industry moves toward offshore wind and other emerging renewable-energy sectors.

In a news release dated August 27, the DMW highlighted the growing opportunities for maritime workers as the energy sector undergoes a transition toward cleaner sources of power. The department emphasized that Filipino seafarers must continue upgrading their skills to remain competitive in an evolving international workforce.

Offshore wind is seen as a promising area for Filipino maritime professionals because many of the skills used in traditional seafaring can be transferred to offshore renewable-energy operations. Industry studies estimate that Filipino seafarers could fill up to 9,800 positions in offshore wind projects in the Philippines through 2040, although additional training—particularly in offshore installation and health and safety—is needed.

The Philippines is also developing training initiatives for offshore operations, including dynamic positioning and other specialized competencies. Recent industry partnerships have sought to prepare Filipino seafarers for the expected growth of offshore wind activities in the country and across Asia.

The DMW\'s call comes as the maritime industry faces significant changes brought by decarbonization, new technologies and the expansion of renewable energy. Continuous upskilling could help Filipino seafarers access new employment opportunities while strengthening the country\'s position as a major source of maritime talent for the global workforce.
