MANILA — The National Maritime Polytechnic (NMP) presented its latest programs, accomplishments, and future initiatives during the Maritime Research Forum 2026 held on September 15, 2026, at Diamond Hotel Manila, highlighting efforts to strengthen maritime training, research, and support services for Filipino seafarers.

During the forum, NMP officials shared updates on the agency’s free maritime training program, which started on August 3, 2026. As of September 14, 2026, the program has already benefited 5,556 trainees, with NMP targeting 12,000 beneficiaries by the end of 2026. The initiative expanded access to 55 free training courses covering STCW-mandated programs, deck and engine courses, safety training, specialized courses, medical training, and other maritime-related programs.

NMP also reported its training performance, recording 22,009 issued training certificates as of August 31, 2026, reflecting the agency’s continued delivery of maritime education and skills development programs for Filipino seafarers. The agency also cited an 83% employment rate and 86% skills utilization rate among sampled graduates, showing the relevance of its training programs to industry needs.

The agency further discussed its plans to expand maritime training access through the proposed establishment of Regional Training Centers (RTCs) in Tanza, Cavite, and Davao City. Feasibility studies for the projects are being conducted in partnership with the Development Academy of the Philippines (DAP) as part of NMP’s efforts to bring government maritime training closer to more seafarers across the country.

The forum also highlighted NMP’s role in maritime research, facility modernization, and seafarer welfare initiatives. Through its research studies, training programs, and development projects, NMP continues to support the growth of Filipino maritime professionals and contribute to the improvement of the country’s maritime sector.
