Types of Fire Extinguisher
Sep 07, 2026

Fire extinguishers are designed for different classes of fire, making proper selection essential for onboard safety. Common types include CO₂, dry powder, water, wet chemical, and foam extinguishers. Seafarers must know their correct applications, locations, and operating procedures to respond quickly and safely during a fire emergency at sea.

A CO₂ fire extinguisher uses carbon dioxide to extinguish electrical and flammable-liquid fires. It leaves no residue but requires caution because CO₂ can displace oxygen in confined spaces onboard ships.

A powder fire extinguisher uses dry chemical powder to quickly control fires by interrupting the chemical reaction. It is commonly used for flammable liquids, gases, and electrical equipment fires.

A water fire extinguisher uses water to cool and extinguish Class A fires involving materials like wood, paper, and cloth. Never use it on electrical equipment or flammable liquid fires.

A wet chemical fire extinguisher uses a special solution to extinguish cooking oil and fat fires by cooling the fire and forming a protective layer that prevents re-ignition.

A foam fire extinguisher extinguishes Class A and flammable liquid fires by forming a foam blanket that smothers flames, reduces heat, and helps prevent the fire from re-igniting.
