The United States and Iran exchanged heavy attacks on Wednesday in a major escalation between the two countries. U.S. forces carried out strikes along Iran’s southern coast, while Iranian forces launched attacks against American military positions across the Middle East, raising concerns that the conflict could enter another prolonged phase.

According to the U.S. military, the strikes targeted Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) facilities, including air-defense sites, radar systems, maritime assets, mine-laying capabilities and communications infrastructure. Iran responded with attacks against U.S. positions in countries including Jordan, Bahrain and Iraq. Iranian officials also warned that Tehran could prevent oil exports from the Gulf, adding further uncertainty over regional energy supplies.

The escalation has serious implications for commercial shipping, particularly in the Strait of Hormuz, a major route for global oil and gas shipments. Continued military activity in and around the waterway could increase risks for tankers, crews and other commercial vessels. Shipowners and operators may also face difficult decisions over routing, insurance coverage and whether voyages through affected waters can be conducted safely.

The United States has indicated that further military action could follow, while uncertainty remains over commercial traffic through the Strait of Hormuz. For seafarers and the wider shipping industry, further escalation could result in vessel diversions, higher insurance and operating costs, delays to energy shipments and increased safety risks for crews operating throughout the region.
