U.S. President Donald Trump urged Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy on September 13 to stop strikes on Russian facilities that produce diesel. Speaking to reporters, Trump said the attacks werecontributing to fuel shortages. His assessment of their effect on global supply has not been independently established.
Ukraine has targeted Russian oil infrastructure during the war. Ukrainian officials have said such facilities help fund and support Russia’s military operations. There was no immediate indication that Ukraine would change its approach following Trump’s remarks.
Diesel markets were already under pressure. In its September oil market report, the International Energy Agency said U.S. diesel and gasoil prices had risen sharply in early September. The agency also reported that oil exports from Gulf countries remained well below their levels before the Middle East conflict.
Diesel is used by vessels, trucks and other transport services. Higher fuel prices may raise operating costs, but the effect on shipping will depend on supply conditions and the duration of the disruptions.
